What is World Down Syndrome Day?

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, which has been officially recognised by the United Nations since 2012.

On this day, people all around the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome, creating a global voice, advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome.

In 2020 the call to action for World Down Syndrome Day is 'We Decide'.

Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day

Saturday 21 March 2020

There are many ways you can get involved and get people talking about Down syndrome. Keep reading for more ideas and themes.

Lots of Socks

Lots of Socks is a campaign aiming to create conversation and foster awareness of Down syndrome. It involves wearing coloured, mismatched, bright, long, short or any other combination of socks to get people talking about Down syndrome. The choice is yours, but we ask that you join us in wearing socks that will create curiosity so you can have a conversation with people about World Down Syndrome Day. It's easy to do, so whether you're at home, kindergarten, school, university, work, play, travel, holiday or anywhere, please join in!

For kindergartens and schools:
Get your child's school or kindergarten involved. We have a schools package that can be used by teachers to help raise awareness. You can download the information pack here. There are also some great activity ideas for teachers available here.

For workplaces and other groups:
You don't need to be a school to get involved with Lots of Socks. Get your workmates, uni class, business, start-up, sports team involved by choosing a day to wear mismatched, bright or coloured socks and raise funds for DSV.

If you'd like to run a Lots of Socks fundraiser email us to register your event and grab any resources and ideas you might need to make your event a winner!

T4321 (Tea for 3 x chromosome 21)

Holding a morning or afternoon tea at your workplace or home is an ideal way to support World Down Syndrome Day. You can incorporate the idea of mismatched socks as per the Lots of Socks campaign, or you can keep it simple.

If you'd like to run your own T4321 fundraiser email us to register your event and grab any resources and ideas you might need to make your event a winner!
