T4321

March the 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. On this day, people across the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome. It is an opportunity to recognise the importance of inclusion and diversity and how positively these values can impact our workplace, home life and our communities. During the months of March and April, many Australians recognise this important day through hosting or supporting a morning or afternoon tea in their homes, workplaces and communities, raising awareness and funds for Down syndrome. It's something we can all do to help create healthier, more inclusive communities.

Why T4321?

T4321 is an abbreviation of Tea for Trisomy 21. Trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down syndrome, refers to the presence of three copies of chromosome 21.

Wrap up of T4321 events held in 2012

Last year 25 hosts (individuals, organisations, schools, early intervention and disability service providers) took part in T4321 and together raised over $15,000.  Proceeds were used to fund services, programs and training for people with Down syndrome and their families. Many events received media coverage and some were even attended by local politicians.

Event hosts reported feeling personally uplifted by the incredibly positive response and encouragement received from friends, family and colleagues by raising awareness about Down syndrome in such a positive and personal way.

A special shout out to last year's top fundraisers - Jo Dibsdale (The Dibsdale Family), Elizabeth Sfetkidis (Marina & her Friends), Wendy McNabbJackie & Antoinette and Darcy Fisher. These ladies went above and beyond by engaging their communities in their events and not only raised significant funds but also shared their experiences of overwhelming feelings of support from their friends, family and community.

Nine schools from across Victoria hosted T4321 events during March and April. Participation ranged from smaller events held just in the staff tea rooms to events held across the school with activities that got kids and parents involved too. As an official community partner of Carlton FC, we were able to offer the school who raised the most funds a special opportunity of a Footy Clinic with two of their players and we were pleased to congratulate Tallarook Primary School as the winning school for 2012! Check out the photos from their special day!

Many thanks to all the following schools for their participation and fundraising efforts: Yarra Junction Primary School, East Bentleigh Primary School, St Joseph's Boronia Primary School, Covenant College Kinder, Noble Park Special Development School, Kew East Primary School, Tallarook Primary School, Galilee Regional Catholic Primary School, Bunyip Primary School
