Family Fun Day
This is a key annual event in the Down syndrome community calendar as it provides a unique, safe and welcoming environment for families to connect, re-connect and simply enjoy being amongst each other. It is also an opportunity to enjoy inspirational entertainment, fun and exhilarating rides and activities as well as yummy treats! Family Fun Day is for people with Down syndrome, their families, carers and close friends, held annually in March to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (21st March).
2013 Event Wrap Up - Family Fun Day - Sunday 17th March 2013
What a brilliant day! The annual Family Fun Day held at Ashwood School on the Sunday 17th March in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day was a fantastic day and a true reflection of the importance of peer support and community connections.
Thankfully, the rain held off for the most part and allowed for the 420 attendees to enjoy the day’s activities.
Activities included face painting (thanks to the 2nd North Syndal Girl Guides, Miles Green & Jess Oakes), Crazy hair (thanks to our friends at Green Butterfly hair salon), Gymnastics Victoria, a footy clinic run by our community partner Carlton Football Club and FIDA, picnic games and arts and crafts projects. Everyone was on their feet and clapping for the E.motion21dance group who didn’t disappoint with another fantastic performance! Rides and attractions included an animal farm, carnival rides and the opportunity to pat and lead Shetland ponies thanks to Ride Ability. Noah’s Ark was back again this year, providing information on Early Intervention for parents, a fantastic disco for the kids and a range from their specialist equipment library for toddlers. New this year, were displays by Ability Pathways to Independence, Down Syndrome Australia, NDIS, Carer’s Victoria and Coeliac Victoria and Tasmania. Fundraising activities included hand knitted doll sales and our friends at Mobile B&S Sharpening participated donating 50% of their profits back to Down Syndrome Victoria. There were also a range of items on offer in the silent auction and 5 wonderful hampers up for grabs in our raffle (a huge thank you to the local Fitzroy businesses that supported us) .
