General Health

Medical issues for kids with Down syndrome are mostly the same as for typically developing children, however there are some conditions that are more prevalent in people with Down syndrome.  Speak to your GP about both common and specific health issues and their symptons, keep an eye out for them but don't lose sleep over every sniffle!

You know your child best, you know what is 'normal' for them, so if you feel that there is something wrong then trust your instincts.

Finding a doctor
There are no doctors in Victoria that specialise in Down syndrome. The best way to find a good local GP, paediatrician etc is to ask for recommendations from other parents at your local Support Group.
Down Syndrome Victoria do not recommend Health Professionals, however, we do have a list of medical professionals that our members have used.

Medicare
There are some, ongoing Medicare rebates to help toward the costs of allied health services, including the following:

See your GP for further information about these initiatives and to obtain a referral to an appropriate therapist.

Immunisations
Infants with Down syndrome may be at an increased risk of contracting illness due to their lower immune systems. This VicHealth newsletter explains what extra vaccines they need.
